It’s been almost two years since Covid’19 affected Pakistan. During these two years many have died, recovered from this virus. And many are still safe from contacting the virus. However, no one knows till when these people will be safe. Or that how long this pandemic will last. Due to this pandemic the mass came to know about many medical terms and phenomenon. One out of those phenomenon is the “herd Immunity”. Now the question arises that what is herd Immunity? And can Pakistan acquire it?
Basically, herd Immunity is the phenomenon in which a large part of the population of a certain area becomes immune to a specific disease. There are two ways to achieve it. One is developing resistance naturally and the other is vaccination. Resistance is developed naturally when your body makes antibodies to fight the virus or the bacteria it is exposed to. Moreover, vaccination can also help achieve the herd Immunity.
Now coming to the point whether Pakistan can achieve herd Immunity or not ?
In order to achieve herd immunity in Pakistan, almost 70% of the population needs to be immune. Either by vaccination or by developed immunity due to prior infection. But there’s a catch! The virus SARS-CoV-2 is gradually mutating. And these mutations are resulting in more resistance by the virus towards the vaccines. Consequently, people are contracting the virus even though they are vaccinated. Moreover, those who had recovered are also contracting the virus again.
Considering this situation it seems almost impossible to achieve herd immunity in Pakistan.
