Pakistan lost a legend on 10th February 2023.
Amjad Islam Amjad succumbed to a cardiac arrest on 10th of February 2023 in Lahore. His death at the age of 78 was a shock for the nation. Many renowned people expressed their grievances regarding his sudden passing.
PM Shehbaz Sharif expressed his sorrow and sent his condolences to the family.
Balighur Rehman- Punjab Governor also expressed sadness over his sudden death and prayed for the peace of his soul and that he receives the highest rank in heaven.
Caretaker Punjab Information Minister Amir Mir also expressed his deep sorrow upon hearing of the literary icon’s sudden passing.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif also tweeted stating, also offered condolences on the death of veteran poet Amjad Islam Amjad and said, “Deeply saddened at the demise of Amjad Islam Amjad, a legendary poet and author who left an indelible impact on the world of Urdu Literature. His words live on, inspiring generations to come. Rest in peace Amjad Sahib.”
Many celebrities and cricketers took over twitter to share their feelings and thoughts about the huge loss Urdu Literature suffered.
Famous Pakistani actor Shaan Shahid also shared his feelings regarding the demise of Amjad Islam. He tweeted stating “Your words will always echo in our hearts. The nation will always remember you.”
Muniba Mazari- A Pakistani activist offered her condolences. “End of an era.” She tweeted.
Let’s talk more about who Amjad Islam Amjad really was?
Amjad Islam Amjad was born in August 1944 in Lahore. He graduated from The Government Islamia College and later on acquired The Master Of Arts degree in Urdu Literature from Punjab University. He started off with his career as a lecturer. He then served the Pakistan Television Corporation as a director from 1975 to 1979.
He was known for his versatile personality and the skills that he possessed. He had a vital role in Urdu Literature. He was an urdu poet, screenwriter, educationist and a lyricist. He wrote numerous drama series for Pakistan including Waris, Dehleez, Samandar, Raat, Waqt and Apnay Log. He wrote more than 70 books.However his main interest resided in writing nazms- Urdu poetry. He achieved numerous awards for his outstanding work and contributions to the world of Literature including the Sitara-e-Imtiaz Award which was awarded by the President of Pakistan in 1988 and the Pride Of Performance award in 1987. He also received the Graduate Award in 1975 for the TV drama ‘Khawab Jaagte Hain’.
Along with writing drama series and poetry, Amjad Islam Amjad is the magical lyricist behind the famous song “Mann ki lagan” which was sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
His work will always be celebrated by the nation. He truly is an inspiration and will be forever remembered as an important part of the Urdu Literature.
